The researchers studied about 264,000 people aged 50 to 71 years for a period of ten years and correlated the type of beverage consumed, with medical diagnoses of depression (total 11,311 individuals).

It was found that those who drank more than four cups or cans of any kind of soft drinks in the day were 30% more likely to develop depression diagnosed by a doctor, compared with those who did not drink any soft drinks.

The risk was even greater for those who prefer to drink diet (31%) than regular soft drinks (22%).

Even those who drank a lot of dietary fruit juices with artificial sweeteners (four or more daily) were 51% more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who did not drink at all dietary fruit juice.

But those who drank four cups of coffee daily had an approximately 10% less likely to develop depression than those who drank no coffee.

"Our research shows that limiting or stopping consumption of diet soft drinks and replace them with coffee may help naturally reduce the risk of depression," said Chen, though, he said, need more research to confirm these findings. Dietetic beverages associated with depression

He also stressed that those who suffer from depression, you should continue to take their medication regularly, which have been prescribed by doctors.

The study found a correlation between soft drinks or fruit juices diet and depression and does not prove that these drinks disturb the minds of some.

It is possible, according to the researchers themselves, that other factors (eg, family history of depression, for example, emergency, etc.) be responsible for depression.

However, the new findings are consistent with some previous studies have also found a link between frequent consumption of dietary drinks with artificial sweeteners and depression.

Still, confirms a study in 2011 had found an association between coffee consumption and a lower incidence of depression in women. Entertainment Center

On the other hand, some experts are skeptical whether the dietary drinks actually increase depression and whether the findings apply to all ages and in all countries apart from the U.S..
